Sami Whitcomb Signs with the Mercury

Sami Whitcomb has agreed to sign as a free agent with the Phoenix Mercury, the team announced Sunday.

Whitcomb has known two homes in the WNBA – Seattle and New York. The 36-year-old played reduced minutes in 2024 for the first time since 2020, averaging 15.3 minutes as the backup point guard for the Storm.

Whitcomb enjoyed her most successful individual campaign in 2021 with the Liberty, shooting 42.5 percent from behind the arc, averaging 11.7 points and 2.7 assists per game during that season. Her three-point shooting fell off to 35.1 percent in 2022 and 38.5 percent in 2023, before totally dipping last summer in Seattle with a career-low 29.2 percent mark from three.

While the shooting wasn’t there, Whitcomb was a sure-handed guard for the Storm while taking good care of the ball, averaging the fewest turnovers per game in her career since the 2018 season.

Whitcomb is a perfect veteran to have off of the bench as a two-time WNBA champ, and she will provide a nice boost to a new-look Phoenix squad that now features talents such as Alyssa Thomas and Satou Sabally to go along with Kahleah Copper.
