Wings to Hire Latricia Trammell as new Head Coach

The Dallas Wings have hired Latricia Trammell, former assistant with the Los Angeles Sparks, to serve as their new head coach. The news was first reported by Howard Megdal of The Next, and confirmed by our Rachel Galligan

Trammell has over 25 years of coaching experience and is extremely well-respected around the WNBA. Known for her defensive acumen, she was hired by the Sparks in 2019. Previously, Trammell was an assistant for the San Antonio Stars, and won two NAIA Division I national championships as the head coach of Oklahoma City University in 2014 and 2015.

Trammell takes over for Vickie Johnson, who compiled a 32-36 record in two seasons leading the Wings. Johnson was successful in 2022 as Dallas made the playoffs and won a game in its first round series against the Connecticut Sun. Her team peaking at the perfect time, Johnson was named Coach of the Month in August. Yet over the course of her two-year stint, various rumblings arose regarding tension between Johnson and certain players in the locker room.

The Wings have not enjoyed much stability since moving to Dallas in 2016. The team’s 18-18 record this season was its best since 2015, when it played in Tulsa. Leadership hopes that Trammell will be able to instill tenets of respectability and consistency as she embarks on her first professional head coaching gig.
