DeWanna Bonner Returns to Connecticut

DeWanna Bonner is signing a deal to return to the Connecticut Sun, as reported by Howard Megdal of The Next Hoops and Alexa Philippou of ESPN.

Bonner, 36, is entering her 15th season in the WNBA. A decorated veteran, Bonner was drafted in 2009 by the Phoenix Mercury out of Auburn University with the fifth overall pick. She spent a majority of her career with the Mercury, playing 10 seasons in the desert and picking up a championship with them in 2009 and 2014. A three-time winner of the Sixth Woman of the Year award, Bonner has been a celebrated face of the league with her consistent play and contributions to both the Mercury and the Connecticut Sun, the team she was traded to in 2020. She averaged 18.1 points per game (PPG) in the 2023 postseason, in addition to 1.2 steals per game (SPG), 2.3 assists per game (APG), and 6.7 rebounds per game (RPG).

This past season with the Sun, Bonner was an All-Star and averaged 17.4 PPG while shooting 42.5 percent from the field. She also averaged 2.2 APG, 5.6 RPG, and 1.1 SPG. In her career, Bonner has averaged 14.9 PPG, 2.3 APG, 1.2 SPG, and 6.1 RPG.

For lack of better words, Bonner is a legend that is still gracing the floor in this league as a high level contributor. Additionally, Brionna Jones is returning to the Sun, keeping Connecticut’s core of Jones, Bonner and Alyssa Thomas together one more year. With Bonner and Jones back in the fold, the Sun have their sights set on finally getting over the hump of bringing a championship to Connecticut.
